      <image:title>mops - Household Essentials: Mops</image:title>
<image:caption>The portraits in Household Essentials present tools that we use to perform our daily cleaning routines. These pieces are a combination of etching, silkscreen, and hand embossing. While the use of these laborious techniques parallels the many steps and work involved in cleaning routines, the overall effortless quality of the images sharply contrasts them. In our society, the labor involved in cleaning is rarely acknowledged, much less valued. Rather, maintaining the “perfect” home is portrayed as being easy, simple, and fast.</image:caption>

The underwear images are printed on translucent lightweight paper in the bright colors currently found in mainstream chain stores and shopping centers. This piece recalls the shopping experience and the choices we make as consumers. There is a flatness and emptiness to these prints that calls attention to the ephemeral and unsatisfying qualities of the packaged identities we purchase.</image:caption>

      <image:title>intimo - Intimo</image:title>
<image:caption>With Intimo I returned to my previous exploration of underwear, but turned the lens onto myself. I created this piece using the first set of underwear I purchased when I was living in Venice 12 years ago. This fall (2013), I returned to Venice for an Artist Residency, and found myself living and working in the same apartment and printshop as when I was freshly out college. Intimo brings to focus ideas of identity and clothing, as a signifier not only to others but also to ourselves. This piece also highlights the importance we place on certain objects. Our lives are filled with objects that we carry with us, as we move from city to city or house to house, only to remain in a drawer or box. We no longer have a practical use for them, and yet, we cannot seem to part with them.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Best if used by… is a series of line drawings commercially printed onto everyday food-safe dinnerware. This piece focuses on the array of food packaging found in our supermarkets. Most of the foods available to us are packaged and we purchase our foods based on how they are wrapped and on the information provided on that wrapping. As anthropologist Donna Gabaccia argues: “Massed-produced foods intended to be prepared or eaten quickly are considered ‘American’ around the globe. What makes foods American…is how they are produced, packaged, and served, not who manufactures or eats them or how they taste.” The ability for daily use allows this piece to enter directly into the context of our meals, thus not only commenting on our daily routines but actually becoming a part of these routines.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I have been interested in food culture and the creation of identity through food for a long time. My work explores this interest, emphasizing the specific customs of the place where I am living; previously Rome, Italy, and Bloomington, Indiana. Serving Size: Specimens examines the food culture of the Midwestern United State. Each piece in the series contains one serving size of potato chips. They are presented as specimens or examples of how and what we eat. Each specimen is labeled with the brand, gram weight, and number of chips per serving. This draws attention to our increasingly manufactured food-scape and to how detached we are from what we consume.</image:caption>

In our search for the “ideal” pre-packaged lifestyle, we often believe that certain goods will add substance to our lives. Inevitably, however, there is an emptiness to these purchases and all that remains is the outer packaging.</image:caption>

Air fresheners are meant to evoke a feeling of ‘clean’ and yet, they are highly artificial and toxic. There is now an expectation that we will curate the scent of our home based on how we want to be perceived.</image:caption>

      <image:title>paper or plastic? - Paper or Plastic?</image:title>
<image:caption>While most academic food studies focus on the “Other” with “Paper of Plastic?” I continued my research into American food culture. Our supermarkets are filled with packages vying for our attention with good design, brand promises, and health claims. For example, if the package is green, we believe the “food” inside is good for us. Indeed, for one out of every four packaged foods, the container is more expensive than what is inside. Responding to these issues, I produced a series of about 200 line drawings of different types of food packaging found in our supermarkets. “Paper or Plastic?” widens the exploration I began in “best if used by…” Ink drawing on Denril film cutouts, on film Variable dimensions 2008</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Household Essentials series explores notions of cleanliness and our definition of what is “clean.” Our cleaning routines and choices of products are deeply rooted in our identities and constitute key elements of how we present ourselves. Along with language or cuisine, we maintain and pass-on cleaning habits and preferences. While these may seem like private choices, they are culturally, socially, and commercially prescribed, thus making them very public.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The portraits in Household Essentials present tools that we use to perform our daily cleaning routines. These pieces are a combination of etching, drawing and collage.

<image:caption>The soft-ground etching process underlines both conceptual and visual aspects of this piece. A soft-ground etching is created by literally squeezing the original object (in this case, underwear), through the printing press. This process leaves an impression on a waxy substance covering the copper plate, which when etched with acid, creates a matrix that can be printed. Both the act of creating the plate and the resulting printed image transform this common piece of clothing into a flat, empty object that cannot be worn, a package that cannot contain. Ultimately, the images become existential, revealing portraits.</image:caption>

<image:caption>VPL (Visible Panty Lines) is a series of silkscreen prints on cellophane. Silkscreen printing is a commercial method and cellophane is an industrial product. By using these materials in a delicate way to create a quiet and intimate space, viewers are faced with the contrast between a personal item and the commercial, mass-produced form of packaging it represents. The transparency of the cellophane cut-outs and the strength of their cast shadows, in a sense parallels the idea of underwear as an object of significance, as something that has an effect, despite the object itself being seldom visible.</image:caption>

      <image:title>accumulation - Accumulation</image:title>
<image:caption>From March, 2019-January, 2020 I allowed google to track my movements. Companies use location data to understand who a person is, based on where they have been and where they are going, in order to influence what that they are going to do next. Accumulation is a transformation of this data into visual expression. The hand drawn images and repetitive nature of this piece parallels my contained, routinized and regimented lifestyle. It is steady, but the routine is imperfect and at times, fails. The use of plastic film allows for visual layering of information. Plastic, like our data, once created, lasts forever. The translucency of the film represents how this data, ever-present in the background and unseen, is tremendously impactful nonetheless.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Everyday, when we choose what to wear, we decide who we want to be and how we want to be seen in the world. It is the first of an endless number of identity relevant decisions we make throughout the day. These decisions often remain out of our consciousness, yet they are a reflection of who we are. Large scale etchings are complex and require purposeful, deliberate actions. The process underlines the impact and consequence of our choices, highlighting the importance of our seemingly thoughtless decisions. Softground etching on Rives BFK 167x30 in. 2019</image:caption>

      <image:title>mending</image:title>
<image:caption>Mending was my daily art practice from September 2017-October 2018. I used the running stitch, traditionally used in mending, as this piece tracks my mending of self, both as artist and competitive athlete. I began this piece when I was finally able to begin training again after two years due to injuries. During much of this time, I was also in too much pain to do my artwork. Each embroidery represents a single training session (silver = swimming, dark gray = cycling, turquoise = running, orange = strength training), and blank spots signify a day off. Both endeavors, art and sport, travel on parallel paths in my life, yet they are very similar. Both take daily practice, dedication, and repetition. Both are imperfect and require immense amounts of labor that no one sees. More abstractly, however, this piece highlights how individual moments, or marks, accumulate to gain significance.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In Perpetual, I look at how the objects with which we interact daily both reinforce, and act upon, our identity and relationship to self. It is through objects that we express who and what we are. I am a swimmer. Bathing suits hanging in the bathroom have been a fixture in my life for as long as a I can remember. They are a constant reminder of that part of my identity. Yet, they hang in my bathroom, an intimate space. They are a reminder to myself and no one else; shifting as I move through moments in my life. In them, I have seen everything from pride and friendship, to hope and strength, and loss and doubt. For these collagraphs the actual bathing suits are used as the matrices. This maintains the materiality and immediacy of the object while also allowing for transformation through process.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Objects store and possess, take in and breathe out the emotions with which they have been associated. Through presents three versions of the same challah recipe: my grandmother’s, my mother's, and my own. They represent a deeply rooted family tradition and ritual, one that connects me to my inner being, to places, languages, and past generations. Through highlights the difference between ritual and routine and the objects through which these are performed. In creating Through, I experimented with photopolymer etching as a way to maintain the original handwriting and allow the process to transmit the emotional weight of these objects. The concrete mixing implement is cast from an original wooden paleta from Guatemala, one used for many years in my mother’s kitchen. The paleta further reflects the emotional ties, weight, and labor encompassed within this ritual.</image:caption>

      <image:title>prelude: sunday - Prelude: Sunday</image:title>
<image:caption>This piece focuses on the ritual element of my list writing. Every Sunday evening I sit quietly and focus on the week to come. I organize the week and figure out each day. This is a grounding ritual, it provides order and sets the tone for the week. When I begin each day, I do not question what I have to do, it has already been decided. For Prelude: Sunday I re-created a block of “post-its” by printing around 50 etchings and forming them into the block. I replicated the pen I use by creating a urethane mold and casting it in concrete. The visual weight of the concrete and its relationship to labor calls attention to the significance of this moment. In addition, these time consuming and delicate processes elevate the importance of this ritual and the objects used in its performance.</image:caption>

Laundry and cleaning products from Mexico are easily found in stores in the United States, from big box stores, such as Target, to smaller Mexican specialty shops. When I first moved to California I began to notice and easily identify the scent of these Mexican detergents on families’ clothing. The prevalence struck me, and highlights the importance of scent as a link to cultural heritage, memory and comfort.</image:caption>

Family portraits are commonly displayed in public areas of the house, thus allowing the private acts of domestic labor and care for the family, expressed through their clothing, to enter the public realm. This portrait represents the individuals in the García family, as they go out into the world. Prayer candles are prevalent in homes and markets in both Mexico and California. Across cultures, candles are products that we buy and subsequently imbue with spiritual and personal meaning, whatever that signifies for each of us. With this piece, I view nostalgia as a form of belonging and as a link to an idealized past. These candles highlight our reliance on products in forming and maintaining our identity. They also speak to the powerful and unbreakable links scents create between time, memory and place.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Etching collage on Beva-Tex 10x6 ft. “Agotada” explores laundry practices in Guatemala, where I am originally from. In Guatemala, everything is washed by hand, outside, out of sight, often by a domestic worker, in a sink called a pila, using round bright orange balls of soap. Doing laundry is cold, hard, manual labor that never ends. There is a very specific scent to these soaps (Ambar brand was used in my home) and it is deeply embedded in my memory. "Agotada” consists of hundreds of etchings of these soap shapes, in various stages of use, composed into an overflowing pile.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This work was presented in the exhibition “courage within WOMEN without shelter” at the Monterey Museum of Art. This exhibition was the culmination of a long-term social action project working with over 50 local women without shelter. The project was designed to use the transformative power of art to reach this vulnerable population and to bring more attention to this issue in my Monterey Bay, California community. I created this body of work in response to my journey meeting and working with these formidable women. I chose to focus my work on the immense physical labor at the core of women without shelter’s daily experience and existence. I also explore the difficulty these women face in maintaining their identities and sense of self, and the central role belongings, their things, play in reinforcing these.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Unheld - "Unheld"</image:title>
<image:caption>“Unheld” is composed of over 500 etchings of socks. The printed socks are hung using tent thread, suspended from a rebar grid, held in place with a bobby pin and anchored to the ground with scotch tape. They sway in place, precariously suspended, much like these women’s lives. The prints are fragile in appearance, yet the thin paper is exceptionally strong.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Unheld - "Unheld"</image:title>
<image:caption>Each “sock” represents one of the over 500 women without shelter living on the Monterey Peninsula. Purposeful use of materials is central to all of my work. In this case, I chose to use everyday materials to speak to the women’s reality of making do with what they have. Thread used for mending tents that are invariably damaged, bobby pins to speak to the women’s desire to hold on to their femininity and the importance of appearance on identity, Scotch tape, for what it takes to literally and figurative hold a life together on the streets. The use of industrial construction materials (rebar hanging structure) speaks to the structural insufficiencies and gaps in support available to unaccompanied women without shelter.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Unheld - "Unheld"</image:title>
<image:caption>The women’s lives are in constant motion, walking day in and day out, and never quite at rest. The importance of a simple item such as comfortable socks is undeniable. Worn and threadbare, socks become a material manifestation of the wear and tear this way of life imposes on the body. I used socks to represent each woman because they are the most requested item at the local women’s day shelter, as well as at shelters nation wide. Socks also fit in with my greater interest in clothing as a vehicle for both maintaining our identity and projecting it onto the world.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Unheld - "Unheld"</image:title>
<image:caption>Central to “Unheld” and “Burdens” (concrete sculpture seen in background of image) is the immense physical labor at the core of women without shelter’s daily experience and existence. I chose to work with laborious, heavy, repetitive processes in order to impose this labor on my own body through the course of creation. Soft ground etching is by nature a slow process and it took many full days of repeating the same steps over and over again to print the full editions, creating a connection with the women’s exhausting daily routines.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Burdens - "Burdens"</image:title>
<image:caption>“Burdens” is a series of 8 concrete bag sculptures. While working with the women, I was struck not only by the importance of their material belongings but also by the burden these become. There is a heaviness and hardness to every aspect of these women’s lives. Their days have a constant circular motion, of walking and waiting, just to be repeated again the next day. The concrete bags visualize the literal heaviness of their belongings on their bodies, as well as symbolize the weight imposed by this way of life on their minds and health.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Concrete, plastic, fabric 17x16x10 in. 2020 Creating the series of 8 sculptures in “Burdens,” required great physical endurance. Working with concrete is unforgiving on the body and fatigue quickly sets in. The labor involved in the process is central to the work as it fortifies the connection between my physical making of the pieces and the women that inspired them.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This series grew out of my ongoing interest in the objects we choose to live with and their importance to and impact on our identities. In one of the art workshops with homeless women, I asked them to consider an object that was important to them and to write a few sentences about it. In layering my drawings over their handwriting, I view these pieces as collaborations. A small piece of each woman is seen and given voice through her handwriting. Conversely, each woman’s identity is obscured through the use of blind contour drawing, created in an intimate moment of focus and presence.</image:caption>

Symbols are taken from maps and borrowed from repeated imagery used by each woman in her own artwork. While it is possible to read the text, I have obscured it with several layers of drafting film and drawing. The viewer needs to work a little harder, spend a little more time with the piece in order to read the text. This maintains the intimacy and spirit of the women’s handwriting and thoughts.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Holding Onward - "Holding Onward"</image:title>
<image:caption>While my work is conceptually driven, I often ground it in our everyday objects and surroundings. In this case, the object that resonated with this meaningful location and demographic is the backpack. Backpacks hold significance for kids and adolescents; they all have, or have had, one. They carry their lives in their backpacks and these become a part of themselves. In essence, their backpack contains their identity, both who they have been and who they are becoming. They will carry their backpacks as they move from their home to the vulnerable space of Ohana. The backpack contains comfort objects, or becomes a comfort object unto itself. It may carry family connection objects, memory objects, bits and pieces of things that reinforce their identities.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Holding Onward - Holding Onward</image:title>
<image:caption>I originally thought of each square as an individual “space” for each child at Ohana. Through the development of the piece, the squares came to symbolize each child’s journey. There is no single direct path, one must be constructed. These “paths” create connections to both the past and future. This visual element of the piece provides an entry point to conversations with the kids about agency and transitions, journeys, converging and coming together, transformation and personal development.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Holding Onward - Holding Onward</image:title>
<image:caption>Why felt? The location of this mural within a medical facility meant that it had to adhere to OSHA standards: nothing sharp, nothing coming off the wall more than about an inch, nothing removed from the surface of the wall, no textiles, nothing that can be used to cause self harm. Additionally, it had to be durable long-term in a high traffic, high touch location. Felt fulfilled all of these needs as well as allowing me to play a little with dimension and layers. The felt also added an organic element, which helped soften the wall covering both visually and physically.</image:caption>

<image:caption>My use of colors is very purposeful and usually limited. While this piece called for whimsy and energy, I also wanted there to be areas of comfort alongside areas of discomfort. Variety of color was also integral to giving kids moments within the piece to settle on, to identity with, be drawn to or away from.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Moving from the bottom of the wall through to the top, the backpacks are arranged to symbolize the transformative path kids move through while at Ohana. The backpacks on the bottom row, those of the youngest kids, are closed and tentative, yet playful and seeking connection. As we move to the middle row, the backpacks are those of adolescents. While a couple are open, beginning to reveal what is contained, forming connections, the third has not yet gained comfort. Finally, the backpack at the top is on its way out; having found its path, it is ready to move on.</image:caption>
